This course is offered by Norwich Business School in the Social Sciences Faculty at UEA and participates in the University Affiliation Program of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute. If you love working with numbers, want a career that’s more varied than accountancy, and aspire to rise to the top of your chosen field, this degree is ideal.

You don’t need to have studied business before to thrive on this degree. You just need to be ambitious, numerate, and passionate about business and finance.

When you work in business, whatever you do, you will make decisions that involve the use of money, and have direct or indirect financial implications. So whatever you want to do in business, understanding finance will give you a distinct advantage in reaching your career goals.

Our affiliation with the CFA institute means you’ll also graduate well placed to take your level 1 CFA exams, ready to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) professional qualification, the most prestigious and highly sought-after credential in investment management.

Our current research interests include finance, accounting, employment systems and institutions, responsible business regulation, marketing, entrepreneurship and business strategy, and innovation, technology and operations management.

Course Structure

All our undergraduate degrees share a common first year. This structure means you’ll get a broad view of business, and can be confident you are on the right course for you. As you progress through your degree you will be able to specialise and tailor your studies to the areas that you find most interesting and that are most relevant for your career goals.

Year 1

Across six fascinating core modules you’ll explore the essentials of modern business. This will give you an excellent grounding in not just management and accounting, but also economics, organisational behaviour, human resources management, marketing, supply chain management, and operations management. By the end of your first year, you won’t just have a firm foundation of your chosen subject, you’ll understand all the key disciplines of business. Throughout your future career you are likely to work closely with these disciplines so this understanding is extremely valuable. And should you discover during your first year that your true passion lies with one of these other subjects, you are welcome to change pathways in order to focus on it – an option roughly 25% of our students take advantage of.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll discover key business finance skills and theories in your compulsory finance module. You’ll also build and hone your quantitative skills. You’ll then explore key management theories, tools and methods in three management modules, developing critical skills that will enable you to start to think for yourself and make your own business decisions. You will also choose one optional module, selecting any of those available across NBS. The annual NBS Module Fair will help you choose the right option for you. You can also study a language.

Year 3

You’ll spend your third year overseas at one of our partner universities in Europe, Asia, Australia or the US. During your time abroad you’ll gain a new perspective on your studies. You’ll also broaden your horizons, grow your confidence and your contacts, and show international employers that you have what it takes to succeed on a global platform

Year 4

Your final year will be your most challenging yet. It’s the time to really push yourself as you drill deeper into the subject and develop your finance specialisms. You will take three compulsory finance modules where you’ll discover the latest thinking and practice in investment management, financial services and financial modelling. You will continue to tailor your degree to your interests by choosing three optional modules. Some third year options are only available if you’ve taken specific second year modules, but we can advise you on this.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching

Throughout your degree you will hone your skills and build your knowledge through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops.

All our teaching is informed by the latest research and real-world business experience. That means you benefit from the latest thinking in the industry. Business is ever-changing, so you won’t just learn to understand, evaluate and utilise the leading theories of today, you’ll also develop the critical skills needed to examine and put to use any new theories and methods that come to the fore during your career. You will study with world-leading researchers in the field of finance. Many of our lectures are interactive, and across all our teaching you’ll use a rich selection of source material, including text books, articles, academic research papers, videos, and business articles from publications such as the Financial Times and the Economist.

Independent study

You will also learn through self-directed study – a skill that’s highly prized by employers. You’ll undertake IT lab work, using online resources to practice text book questions. You’ll also have the option to take part in various projects, including solving a live business problem for a real company. In addition you can choose to enhance your studies by getting involved in the various student-led, extracurricular business related societies.

Team work and communication

During your first year, and in some of your second and third year modules, you will work alongside students from other NBS degrees. This will build your teamwork and communication skills, as well as helping you gain insight into other business disciplines. We attract students from the UK and all over the world, so the relationships you build here will also be valuable if you aspire to an international career, to work for a multi-national company or even start your own.

Guest speakers

During your time at UEA you’ll have the chance to gain unique perspectives from leading industry figures, with opportunities to hear guest speakers from the business world, including UEA alumni. Past speakers from Goldman Sachs, PwC and EY have given students valuable insights into the transition from student to business life, sharing their unique experiences and advice about how to succeed in business.

Employability

Your career is our priority, and employability is embedded in our degrees in all sorts of innovative ways, from guest speakers from industry and projects with real businesses, to accreditations and exemptions from key professional bodies, to our flagship Employability Week. During this annual event you can meet potential employers and speak to successful UEA alumni about how they got where they are now.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a mix of coursework (including course test, individual and/or group presentation) and examination. The balance is approximately 57 per cent exams and 43 per cent coursework, depending on the optional modules you choose.

Optional Study abroad or Placement Year

On this course you will spend your third year studying abroad before returning to UEA for your final year. A year abroad is a unique, fulfilling experience that will help you develop skills that you’ll use throughout your career, and that are coveted by employers. You can choose from a broad range of partner universities in Europe, Australia, North America or Asia. Although you will need to pass your year abroad, it won’t count towards your final degree classification.

While you’re away you will be encouraged to take modules related to your personal interests and career goals. They could be in business finance or management, or in other disciplines. In addition to studying subjects offered by your host institute, you’ll also get to experience a different culture and learn a little more about yourself. Students who spend a year abroad often grow in self-confidence as a result of the challenges posed by a new environment. This is a quality future employers find attractive and a valuable life skill in itself.

Should you wish to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) professional qualification, the most prestigious and highly sought-after credential in investment management, our affiliation with the CFA institute means you’ll also graduate well prepared for your level 1 CFA exams. We offer one scholarship for third year students to put towards books or exam fees for the CFA exams. 

Graduate Trainee Management Scheme

After you graduate you could secure a nine-month paid graduate trainee placement as part of our Graduate Trainee Management Scheme (GTMS). Created in partnership with local employers, every year the GTMS features a number of exciting placements that are ring-fenced for our graduates. Our best students are then put forward for those positions. This is your chance to gain industry experience in a salaried position. Placements often lead to employment, so it’s also a chance to kick start your career. All students that are eligible to work in the UK and meet a certain level of academic achievement during their studies are eligible to apply for the GTMS.

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS (1)

How do businesses organise themselves? This module helps you to explore the dynamic and ever-changing world of business and provides insights into the managerial role. Introduction to Business explores the business environment, key environmental drivers and the basic functions of organisations. It is designed to provide essential core knowledge for Year 1 Business students on how organisations are managed in response to changes in the business environment and what is the role of its functional divisions in implementing strategic responses. In addition, the module also explores some of the current issues faced by organisations such as sustainability, corporate social responsibility and internationalisation. Core business theory is introduced in lectures and applied practically with the use of examples in seminars. By the end of this module you will be able to understand and apply key business concepts and a range of analytical tools to explore the business environment. Introduction to Business facilitates study skills development that is essential across all three years of the undergraduate degree by developing academic writing, presentation, team working and communication skills effectively.

INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL AND MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING (1)

It is vital that everyone working in business has an understanding of accounting data in order that financial information can be used to add value to the organisation. You'll be provided with a foundation in the theory and practice of accounting and an introduction to the role, context and language of financial reporting and management accounting. The module assumes no previous study of accounting. You'll begin with building a set of accounts from scratch so that you will be able to analyse and provide insight form the major financial statements. You'll also look at management decision making tools such as costing, budgeting and financial decision making. You will be required to actively participate in your learning both in lectures and seminars. The module employs a learn by doing approach.

INTRODUCTION TO ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR (1)

How do you lead and manage teams? How do you lead and manage dynamic organisations? How do you navigate around the internal workings of organisations? In this module, you'll have the opportunity to explore these questions and many more in the fascinating subject of organisational behaviour. You'll explore one of the key areas of business and management - that is, how to understand and manage people and organisations effectively. As the title of the module implies, there is also particular emphasis on the way that individuals behave and how that shapes what an organisation is like and how it performs. To this end, you'll explore the processes associated with leadership, team effectiveness and communication. You'll learn about what motivates people, as well as the challenges of conflict. Additionally, you'll learn about the roles that structures, change and power have on organisational life, and how they might be managed effectively. On successful completion of the module, you'll have discovered key insights into the nature of social interaction in business and organisations. You'll have had opportunities for self-reflection and personal learning. And you'll be ready to take your learning about understanding people at work to the next level.

INTRODUCTION TO QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR BUSINESS

How do businesses use mathematics and statistics to make strategic decisions? How does a business make use of digital technology to facilitate their operations? You'll be provided with the necessary skills to understand these questions. You'll be introduced to important mathematical and statistical skills which are commonly used in the workplace. Alongside this, you will develop your skills in using spreadsheets and a specialised statistical software package. You will learn to use quantitative techniques to summarise, analyse and interpret data. You will then use this information to make decisions and communicate your results to others in a variety of different ways. You will begin by revising and refreshing some fundamental mathematical concepts. You will then undertake a study of both descriptive and inferential statistics. You will learn the techniques for describing data both graphically and numerically. You will learn which techniques are appropriate in different circumstances. You will learn how to measure uncertainty and why this is necessary. You will then go on to see how it is possible to make decisions about a whole data set by selecting a sample from the population. By gaining an understanding of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing you will see how a business is able to make strategic decisions which are vital to the success of the business. Your learning will be underpinned by relevant examples from the business world. You will learn through a mixture of lectures, and IT-based seminars. You will be assessed on your learning with a computer-based multiple choice maths test (25%), a computer based descriptive statistics test (25%) and a computer based inferential statistics test (50%). On successful completion of the module, you'll have the knowledge and skills to assess relevant business problems in a quantitative manner. You'll be given a general introduction and foundational grounding to Marketing. You'll be concerned with marketing functions of an organisation and seek to develop awareness and understanding of marketing as an integrated business activity. You'll focus on the theoretical frameworks which underpin an organisation's responses to market demand. Additionally, you'll consider examples of marketing programmes for a variety of organisational contexts to provide an industry perspective to theory.

On this module you'll learn about the basic principles of financial management and how to apply them to the main decisions faced by the financial manager. For example, you'll consider why the firm's owners would like the manager to increase firm value, and how the manager will choose between investments that may pay off at different points of time or have different degrees of risk. Moreover, you'll explore how companies raise the necessary funds to pay for these investments and why they might prefer a particular source of finance. Overall, this module will present you with the tools of modern financial management in a consistent conceptual framework.

If you become a manager of people, how will you look after those in your team, department or wider organisation? Will you seek to empower, encourage and energise your staff? How will you deal with conflict and management control? You'll have the chance to examine a range of approaches to managing people across a variety of organisational contexts and issues. By doing so, you'll discover valuable insights into the way that organisations work and the impact that different human resource management approaches can have on organisations, people and business. You'll learn about the strategic significance of human resource management for competitive advantage, and particularly the processes to recruit, reward and retain the staff your organisation needs. You'll also explore contemporary issues about managing employees against a background of change and internationalisation. This module provides students with an introduction to core trade theory and principles in a business context. It combines basic microeconomic and macroeconomic principles with cases/applications in a teaching programme designed to help you understand current business and international business issues. What drives cross-border trade flows? Why is free trade better than autarchy and what is the cost of not having it? How does cross-border trade affect economic growth? And what are the most common challenges that firms have to face when operating across borders? The module will provide you with a set of technical tools and way of thinking to answer such questions, among others.

OPERATIONS STRATEGY AND MANAGEMENT

What does it take for an organisation to succeed? Managing operations well is critical to every type of organisation and requires both strategic and tactical skills. Only through effective and efficient utilization of resources can an organisation be successful in the long run. Operations management is concerned with explaining how manufacturing and service organisations work. This module will introduce you to this functional field of management which encompasses the design and improvement of the processes and systems employed in the creation and delivery of an organisation's products and services.

QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR BUSINESS

How do businesses use mathematics to make strategic decisions? How can statistical methods help you understand complicated situations and which ones should you use? How can digital tools help you solve quantitative problems. You'll be given an insight into these questions. You'll be introduced to important statistical skills and decision-making methods through their mathematical underpinning. Building upon this, you will develop your skills in using digital tools to describe and solve these problems too. You'll learn to interpret and communicate the results of your analyses to potential colleagues and clients by written, oral and visual means. You'll begin by deepening your understanding of hypothesis testing methods concerning means of samples. You'll then learn about the essential tools of correlation and regression, leading naturally to multiple regression analysis. After this your learning will be focussed on modelling business scenarios using time-series forecasting, model simulation and validation, linear programming, project planning methods and decision making. In addition the mathematical theory behind how monetary values are affected by time (for example interest calculations, mortgages, net present values) and effective inventory control models will be explored. Your learning will be underpinned by relevant examples from the business world. Wherever relevant, you will be taught how to use a digital tool to perform these tasks. You'll learn through a mixture of lectures, IT-based seminars and scenario-based seminars. You'll be encouraged to communicate your findings both orally and in writing, and to defend your assertions using sound quantitative reasoning. You'll be assessed on your learning with a computer-based course test (20%) and a written examination (80%). AUDITING AND ASSURANCE

What do auditors do? When Enron collapsed in 2001 people asked where were the auditors? The same question was being asked when Lehman Bros collapsed in 2008. This module looks at the detail of what auditors do. You will learn about the tools used by auditors to plan and deliver a quality audit; tools such as risk assessment, documenting and analysing systems, testing details of transactions and using analytical procedures to understand where accounting errors may have occurred. You will start by going through the process of an audit, how the auditors use a risk based approach to develop an audit strategy and how that audit strategy is applied to different parts of the financial statements. You will look in depth at the audit of areas such as inventory. You will explore the specific issues thrown up by the pervasive use of information technology. You will consider how the audit field work is reviewed and comes together to produce the audit report. When you have competed this module you will be able to understand and use the technical language of audit. You will have developed your transferable skills of critical evaluation of arguments and evidence.

BUSINESS AND COMPANY LAW

This module is highly vocational and primarily designed for those taking accounting and related degrees, who wish to satisfy the curriculum requirements of the accounting profession, as having a foundation in aspects of English business and company law. You'll cover in particular detail the Law of Contract and Company Law but also a wide variety of other subject areas, including the English Legal System, Partnership and Agency Law, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Data Protection Law and Employment Law.

BUSINESS ETHICS

How do we know what is morally right and wrong in business? Is it ever ethical to accept 'corporate gifts' or to be a 'whistle-blower'? What new and complex ethical issues are raised by the globalisation of business? Questions like these are central to this module. In this module you will learn about the nature, applications and consequences of ethics in business. You'll discover why individuals sometimes make unethical business decisions. You will learn to use theoretical tools that help you to identify and analyse key ethical problems associated with business practice. You will also gain knowledge of practical approaches for managing business ethics in organisations. This module is ideal for those with an interest in corporate responsibility and sustainability. You will begin with an overview of what business ethics is and why it is important. You will go on to master the major ethical theories and concepts that form the core of business ethics. You'll then build on these foundations to explore important business ethics issues - examples could include whistleblowing, environmental sustainability, corporate influence and/or others. You will discover how to use ethical theories to gain an in-depth understanding of whether, and to what extent, such issues are ethically problematic. You will also gain hands-on experience of applying ethical theories to business scenarios through a range of activities (e.g. role play, small group exercises, case study). You will learn through a combination of interactive lectures and seminars, and independent study. You'll be assessed through coursework and an exam. By successfully completing this module you will have new knowledge and skills that increase your ethical awareness and enable you to communicate your ideas clearly and systematically based on evidence. DIGITAL MARKETING AND THE SERVICE ECONOMY

This module advances your understanding of strategic marketing by focusing on digital and service marketing. While strategy is about planning, developing and continuously creating the firm's future to ensure sustainable competitive advantage, today's firm must learn to adapt its marketing activities and ground its understanding in the reality of its chosen markets. We draw on digital marketing and service theories by highlighting different models, case studies and industry experience. We propose to develop strategic thinking for marketers in a highly challenging technological world, and to help lead firms in facing future challenges in a more connected economy.

EMPLOYABILITY, CREATIVITY AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

The overall aim of the module is to encourage you to develop key employability skills that will stand you in good stead for a future career in business, management, and the creative sectors. You will find opportunities to practice skills such as self-organization, communication, leadership, creativity, design thinking, and problem solving relevant to the expectations of graduate employers. The module will put you right in the centre of your own learning and engagement with an array of developmental activities designed to develop yourself and to develop adaptable and practical approaches to your future roles within organizations. This module draws from an interdisciplinary perspective to understand career success, creativity, self-making and personal branding. It will build on foundational concepts and skills in career development from across disciplines, including psychology, business, design thinking, entrepreneurship, and employability. The module also involves the development of practical employable skills including preparing CV, writing a cover letter, and preparing for job interviews. This is an applied vision and skill development module; focusing on the development of the new skill sets for professionals of the 21st century. It is designed as a learning environment and a management trainee program that focuses on the development of knowledge and skills for global leaders. A core belief underlying our approach, demonstrated in interactive sessions, stems from the Chinese proverb, "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." We will have intensive brainstorming sessions, professional development workshops and executive training programs to help you and your colleagues to develop and apply professional skills for your career in the 21st century. FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING

What are the rules that dictate how company accounts should be prepared and why do those rules exist? This is the essence of this module. Whilst company directors may wish to present the financial condition of a business in the best possible light, rules have been developed to protect investors and users of the accounts from being misled. You'll develop knowledge and skills in understanding and applying accounting standards when preparing financial statements. You'll also prepare and analyse statements of both individual businesses and groups of companies. Large UK companies report using International Financial Reporting Standards and these are the standards that you'll use. You'll begin by preparing basic financial statements and progress, preparing accounts of increasing complexity by looking at topics including goodwill, leases, cashflow statements, foreign currency transactions, financial instruments and group accounts. You'll also deepen your analytical skills through ratio analysis. You'll learn through a mixture of lectures, seminars and self-study, and be assessed by coursework (20%) and final examination (80%). On successful completion of this module, you'll have acquired significant technical skills in both the preparation and analysis of financial statements. This will give you a strong basis from which to build should you wish to study advanced financial accounting or are planning on a career in business or accounting.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR MANAGEMENT

You'll discover the ways in which organizations acquire, implement, and manage modern information systems. You'll gain an in-depth knowledge of important topical applications of information systems, including Business Intelligence, the Human Computer Interface (HCI), Change Management, Information Systems Development, and Sustainable Technologies. You'll also explore and analyse the way new technologies are changing how organisations do business and interact with customers. You'll also address the changing role of information systems and technology in modern organisations. In particular, you'll examine the multiple roles and uses of information in organisations, meaning the emphasis of this module is on the 'I' in IT (information), not on the 'T' (technology).

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING

This module aims to develop students' understanding of the theory and practice of management accounting. It develops underpinning competencies in management accounting and builds on topics introduced in the first year. It extends comprehension of the role and system of management accounting for performance measurement, planning, decision making and control across a range of organisations. Additionally, it introduces recent developments in management accounting practice, particularly those which underpin its growing strategic role.

MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

How do businesses go about getting their messages across to their customers? This module will explain how modern organisations plan their communications with the people that matter to them. You will discover the range of activities and tools which is available to marketing managers from traditional advertising and public relations (PR) to the more up-to-date product placement and social media. You'll look at the issues that arise in planning, implementing and managing Integrated Marketing Communications - IMC - campaign. In this module, you will deal with the basic and advanced theories, models and techniques that have been developed and used in the financial industry and research for investment management. You will learn how wealth can be allocated optimally across various types of assets in order to meet different investor objectives. However, we shall also discuss arguments and evidence related to criticism of these approaches and the usefulness of alternatives, such as behavioural finance. In 2014 Tesco admitted that it had overstated profits by GBP326 million leading to legal costs, fines and compensation payments totalling a further GBP235 million. Investors rely on the financial statements of companies like Tesco. This module explores some of the issues that make preparing and understanding financial statements far from straightforward. The foundation for understanding financial statements are the standards which are used to produce them. But how did we get the standards we use today? You will learn about the regulatory context of financial reporting and look at some of the key issues that are currently being debated and negotiated. You will look at the key bodies involved in accounting regulation and consider how new standards are negotiated. You will apply concepts and theories of financial accounting to standards that relate to groups of companies, to gain a deeper understanding of both group accounts and the political processes around standard setting. How does the UK government raise money through taxes? There are several options available and in this module you'll consider the rationale behind the main types of tax and learn how to prepare tax computations. Some aspects of international tax will also be considered. You'll develop knowledge of income tax, national insurance, corporation tax, capital gains tax and VAT. For each of these taxes you'll learn how to set out computations and calculate tax payable. You'll develop your analytical skills by considering how to reduce tax payable through tax planning and will also look at the ethical issues around tax avoidance and evasion. This module looks at the detail of what auditors do. You will learn about the tools used by auditors to plan and deliver a quality audit; tools such as risk assessment, documenting and analysing systems, testing details of transactions and using analytical procedures to understand where accounting errors may have occurred. You will start by going through the process of an audit, how the auditors use a risk based approach to develop an audit strategy and how that audit strategy is applied to different parts of the financial statements. Whilst company directors may wish to present the financial condition of a business in the best possible light, rules have been developed to protect investors and users of the accounts from being misled. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice.   • Access Course Pass with Distinction in 36 credits at level 3 and Merit in 9 credits at Level 3

Entry Requirement

GCSE Requirements:  GCSE English Language grade 4 and GCSE Mathematics grade 4 or GCSE English Language grade C and GCSE Mathematics grade C.

UEA recognises that some students take a mixture of International Baccalaureate IB or International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme IBCP study rather than the full diploma, taking Higher levels in addition to A levels and/or BTEC qualifications. At UEA we do consider a combination of qualifications for entry, provided a minimum of three qualifications are taken at a higher Level. In addition some degree programmes require specific subjects at a higher level.

 

Students for whom English is a Foreign language

We welcome applications from students from all academic backgrounds. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including speaking, listening, reading and writing) at the following level:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in any component)

Interviews

The majority of candidates will not be called for an interview and a decision will be made via UCAS Track. However, for some students an interview will be requested. You may be called for an interview to help the School of Study, and you, understand if the course is the right choice for you.  The interview will cover topics such as your current studies, reasons for choosing the course and your personal interests and extra-curricular activities.  Where an interview is required the Admissions Service will contact you directly to arrange a convenient time.

Gap Year

We welcome applications from students who have already taken or intend to take a gap year.  We believe that a year between school and university can be of substantial benefit. You are advised to indicate your reason for wishing to defer entry and to contact admissions@uea.ac.uk directly to discuss this further.

Scholarships

Norwich Business School: UK/EU Student Scholarship Scheme

Norwich Business School is offering a scholarship to reward outstanding academic achievement to well-qualified and highly motivated students.

Scholarships will be awarded as a one-off payment to help you embark on your academic career. These awards are based on merit and you will be given a payment of £500 for each A grade achieved at A2 level. So, if you achieve AAA you will receive £1,500 from the Norwich Business School and £1,500 from the University of East Anglia. Details of Norwich Business School Scholarships.

How to Apply

Applications need to be made via the Universities Colleges and Admissions Services (UCAS), using the UCAS Apply option.

UCAS Apply is a secure online application system that allows you to apply for full-time Undergraduate courses at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom. It is made up of different sections that you need to complete. Your application does not have to be completed all at once. The system allows you to leave a section partially completed so you can return to it later and add to or edit any information you have entered. Once your application is complete, it must be sent to UCAS so that they can process it and send it to your chosen universities and colleges.
